Speaker: Prod. Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faris Bin Ismail
Prof. Dato’ Dr. shared an insightful overview of the history and vision of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He explained that IIUM was founded in the 1980s to integrate Islamic knowledge into all academic fields, moving away from a purely secular approach. Before IIUM, subjects like law and economics were taught separately from Islamic teachings. The professor highlighted key figures in IIUM’s development, such as Ahmad Ibrahim, who worked to modernize Sharia law, and Abdul Hamid Abdul Sulaiman, who advocated combining Islamic knowledge with social sciences. He also stressed that IIUM graduates should aim to be agents of positive change, guided by the goal of pleasing God and spreading mercy to all.
Prof. Dato’ Dr. then discussed leadership, using Prophet Muhammad SAW as the ultimate example. He recommended The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey and explained key habits for effective leadership, such as controlling your thoughts and goals, having a clear vision, prioritizing important tasks, listening before responding, and taking time for self-renewal through worship. He emphasized how these habits could help individuals lead effectively while staying grounded in their faith. The session ended with a Q&A, where students engaged with the professor’s insights. Overall, the program helped students develop valuable leadership qualities by learning from Prof. Dato’ Dr.’s experiences.
